Having been out of contention for a long while because of injuries, fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah and opener Shikhar Dhawan are expected to make returns to international cricket and they have been included in the squad for the back-to-back upcoming home series against Sri Lanka featuring three T20Is and versus Australia when three ODIs will be played beginning from January 14.
Vice-captain Rohit Sharma who had an amazing year in 2019, having smashed runs and broken and established records for fun, has been left out of the first series to afford him some much-needed rests- the three T20Is against Sri Lanka which start from 5th January.
There is still no sign of MS Dhoni making an immediate comeback as he continues to be left out of contention as has been the case since the ICC World Cup in the summer.
Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah who has been on a spectacular run of form in his career suffered from a lower-back fracture which kept him out of action since India’s tour of West Indies in August. Bumrah had written many headlines in that series, having picked up 13 wickets in just two Tests. He missed the home series against South Africa as well as Bangladesh – both of them involving Tests and T20Is. To nurse his back injury and to avoid any future relapses, Bumrah spent a long time to address rehabilitation and is now heading back to full fitness. He was also caught bowling in the nets in the practice session before India’s second ODI against the West Indies in Vishakhapatnam.
Shikhar Dhawan suffered an injury to his thumb during the 2019 ICC World Cup and as a result, missed half of the matches in the competition. He, however, recovered and returned to action in the tour of West Indies and also featured when India hosted Bangladesh at home before suffering another set-back – this time, a deep cut to his knee while he was putting in the effort of a full-length dive to get back to safety in the Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament. He needed multiple stitches to his knee to close the wound. However, he has recovered from that injury layoff as well and will return to cricketing action across in the limited-overs side.
Shikhar Dhawan will directly replace Rohit Sharma in the T20 squad while Bumrah will walk in to fill the spot of Bhuvneshwar Kumar who missed the ODI series against West Indies because of an injury to his groin. Kumar will be an absentee in the upcoming two series against Sri Lanka and Australia as well. Dhawan will replace Mayank Agarwal – who came in as a replacement for Shikhar in the ODI squad.
Deepak Chahar, who suffered stress fracture to his lower back during the series against West Indies will have to sit out until at least April 2020. Bumrah will walk into the ODI lineup to replace Chahar.
