Dhoni’s selection for the T20 World Cup squad would depend on his IPL form – Ravi Shastri

Dhoni is yet to play a single minute for the senior men’s side since the disappointing loss to New Zealand in the World Cup in England in the summer. And his future in international cricket pretty much hangs on the balance, where his form in the upcoming IPL season will play a pivotal role according to head coach Ravi Shastri.

Chief selector MSK Prasad recently suggested that the national side should ‘move on’ from Dhoni but new BCCI President Sourav Ganguly made it clear that the decision should rest with the player in question. Shastri has now opened the door for Dhoni’s comeback to the national side and especially for the T20 World Cup in Australia next year. All of it will depend on how he performs with Chennai Super Kings in the IPL next season.

Even though the 38-year-old hasn’t been picked for the upcoming West Indies ODIs, he was recently spotted practicing at the nets with the Jharkhand side sparking endless debates over his future.

“It all depends on when he starts playing and how he is playing during the IPL,” Ravi Shastri told IANS. “What are the other people doing with the wicketkeeping gloves or what is the form of those players as opposed to Dhoni’s form.”

Ravi Shastri also pointed out that India’s T20 World Cup squad will be more or less decided post-IPL based on the performances in the tournament. “The IPL becomes a massive tournament because that could be the last tournament after which more or less your 15 is decided,” he said. “There might be one player who might be there and thereabouts in case of an injury or whatever.

“But your team I would say would be known after the IPL. What I would say is rather than speculating of who is where wait for the IPL to get over and then you are in a position to take a call on who is the best 17 in the country.”
