On 1st May 2019, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) defeated the Delhi Capitals (DC) by 80 runs to come one up in the IPL 2019 standings. The Super Kings led the match at 179-4 batting first at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Subsequently, the visitors were bowled all out in just 16.2 overs and scoring about 99 runs. CSK’s Net Run Rate (NRR) was boosted incredibly with this win to 0.209, which was previously at -0.113. Alternatively, the NRR of the Delhi Capitals suffered, dropping down from a gracious 0.233 to -0.096 after the loss.
The Chennai Super Kings seemed to struggle in the beginning due to surface slowness after they started batting, in the evening. Faf du Plessis and Suresh Raina scored 27-1 in about 6 overs after Shane Watson was dismissed for a duck in 9 balls. There were several singles that went in between both the batsmen besides the occasional boundary and together the association was able to score about 83 runs. Finally, in the 14th over, Faf du Plessis was dismissed after completing 39 (41). Thereafter, in the 15th over, Suresh Raina was dismissed for 59 (37). It was then up to Ravindra Jadeja and MS Dhoni to take the team towards 150 runs. It was Dhoni’s inimitable style that led CSK to a win after he hit three sixes and finished at 179-4, right after Jadeja’s dismissal. CSK added 49 runs in the subsequent 5 overs to add them to their scoreboard. In the last 5 overs, they finished off with 77 runs.
After they conceded 126 runs in the back half of the CSK innings, the Delhi Capitals made it rather difficult for them. In the first over, Prithvi Shaw got a straight at the fielder point, even as DC got off to a poor start. Shreyas Iyer and Shikhar Dhawan together added some numbers and scored 48 runs, which would also be the highest of the innings. Harbhajan Singh got the better of Dhawan when he was dismissed and the rest of the innings for DC would be no more than a trail. The Delhi Capitals middle-order would face spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Imran Tahir on a spinner-friendly pitch and between 3 and 8, all of the batsmen would be dismissed. Shreyas Iyer was the only one with a respectable score of 44 runs off 31 balls. In the 12th over, however, even he was dismissed with some excellent glove work coming from the stumps. There were about 8 batsmen among the Delhi Capitals, who were dismissed with single number runs. Imran Tahir returned some sensational figures for the Chennai Super Kings at 4 for 12 even without having completed his 4 overs. Ravindra Jadeja, meanwhile, returned 3 for 9 in about three overs. The other wicket takers were Deepak Chahar at 3-0-32-1 and Harbhajan Singh at 1 – 28.

Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni shone during the match as they displayed some really outstanding performances for the Chennai Super Kings. Batting at number 4, MS Dhoni scored 44 off 22 balls and batting at number 3, Suresh Raina scored 59 runs. Because the surface was extremely spinner-oriented, Raina did not seem to return back to form in time. Yet, the Delhi Capitals were shown the door by the left-hander when he scored on balls rendered by Axar Patel, Amit Mishra, and J Suchith, 43 off 25 balls. At the backend, again, MS Dhoni was in total form, where, at the beginning of the 19th over, he was at 13 off 12 balls. When he scored 31 off 10 balls in the last two overs, the heat was entirely on. Any ball at a distance would be sent down the ground, and a ball that was short would be pulled away as he quickly gauged the length. The innings would be closed by the CSK captain in absolute style as he scored sixes out of the remaining two balls. The final ball was pulled away to the backward square, while the last delivery was sent into the deep wicket.
The chief smashups were delivered by CSK’s Imran Tahir and Ravindra Jadeja. Immediately after the power play, Imran Tahir was introduced and in his second delivery itself dismissed Rishabh Pant to be caught at the Long-On. In the second over, and in the eleventh innings, he struck again when he got Shane Rutherford to slash one to the point but not before dismissing Axar Patel three balls earlier, when he reached out to play a wide googly ball and edged the ball into the slip. In the 8th, 10th and 12th overs, as Jadeja bowled and Colin Ingram would be lost by DC for an LBW in the fourth delivery. In his third and final over, Ravindra Jadeja ensured that Shreyas Iyer and Chris Morris were stumped. While bowled nine dot deliveries, he would also be the only player, who didn’t allow the ball to go across the boundary – he ended the game at 3 – 0 – 9 – 3.
