BCCI has replaced KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya with Shubman Gill and Vijay Shankar for the current ODI series in Australia and the subsequent limited-overs series in New Zealand. While Gill will only join the team for the New Zealand Tour, which includes five ODIs and three T20Is, Vijay will join the team ahead of the second ODI for the present Australian series.
Pandya and Rahul, who were included in the Indian squad for ODI series in Australia were sent home after BCCI had objected to their comments on a TV chat show- Koffee with Karan 6. The duo was given seven days to explain why proceedings for misconduct and discipline under Rule 41 of the BCCI Constitution should not be initiated against them.
Gill will return to New Zealand, where he was named as the player of the tournament during last year’s successful U-19 World Cup campaign in India under the advice of Rahul Dravid that helped him to achieve success in the one-day international youth. After the tournament, he had a fast rise that saw him run on the domestic circuit for India A tour and Punjab.
Gill was also successful in signing an IPL contract for the first time when he was picked up by Kolkata Knight Riders and the fruitful 12-month period culminated in a young call to the top. On the other hand, Vijay already represented India in the T20 format five times when he was chosen to play in the Nidahas Trophy.
